Sunday, 3/14, 5:00-8:00 pm - Business Meeting, Potluck and Program. Location at the home of Linda Centurion, 3940 SE 47th Ave in Portland. All are invited to participate in the business meeting (where we'll be awarding $2,000 in grants), share dinner over great conversations, and/or hear stories from a Peace Corps founder. 7:00-8:00 Program on Peace Corps History. Anthropologist Robert Textor was present at Peace Corps' creation in 1960 and is credited with making the case to the political leaders that Volunteers be trained in language and cultural skills. He developed the first training program for the very first group of Volunteers. Bob will share fascinating stories of the early days and what it was like to participate as Peace Corps was being created very fast and by people who had almost no experience outside of the United States. Bob is an emeritus professor of anthropology from Stanford University. He is also the pioneering founder of Ethnographic Futures Research and the editor of Cultural Frontiers of the Peace Corps, MIT Press 1966.

Friday, 3/19, 6:30 pm - Game Night. Location at the home of Jim Maddry, 4053 NE 16th Ave in Portland. We'll chip in for pizza (including gluten-free and vegetarian) at 6:30, then the games will begin at 7:30. RSVP required! Please e-mail Jim with the number in your party and your pizza and game preferences. Games on hand may include Bananagrams, Chess, Scrabble, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride. You'll be welcome to bring your favorites. Call Jim with any questions at 503-288-3046.

Saturday, 3/20, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm - Service Activity: SOLV Spring Beach Cleanup at Cannon Beach, Oregon. Take US 26 west, then US 101 south to Cannon Beach (allow two hours from Portland). This event will happen rain or shine; be sure to dress for the weather. If you register in advance on SOLV's website, you can skip the paperwork when you pick up your gloves. Each adult needs to register separately but may list volunteers under age 18. Sign up as part of Columbia River Peace Corps Association in the grey box in the middle of the page, then let CRPCA's Anne Kimberly (family@crpca.org, cell 503-929-1470) know to look out for you. After the event, folks are welcome to bring the kids and a picnic lunch over to Indian Beach at Ecola State Park (two miles north of Cannon Beach, $5 per vehicle day use fee) for some tide pool exploration.

Sunday, 4/11, 5:00-8:00 pm - Business Meeting, Potluck and Program. Location at the home of Tai Bainter, 500 Martin Ct in Vancouver, WA. All are welcome to the 5pm CRPCA business meeting (agenda items will include electing our 2010-2011 board members and updates from recent NPCA webinars), 6pm dinner (please bring a dish to share), and 7pm program on Micro-Enterprise.

Friday, 4/16, 6:30 pm - Restaurant gathering at Limo Peruvian Restaurant, 2340 NW Westover Rd in Portland. One block west of NW 23rd & Everett. Wednesday, 4/21, 7:15 pm - Inaugural meeting of the CRPCA Book Club. Location at the home of Linda Centurion, 3940 SE 47th Ave in Portland. Those who attend will choose the next several books we'll discuss. The book to read for this first meeting is Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes by Tamim Ansary (2009).

May 2010

Thursday, 5/13, 6:30 pm - Nom Party. Location at Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy in Portland. Come show support for newly nominated Peace Corps applicants from around Portland. Bring your families! RSVP to Ally Packer, peacecorps@pdx.edu, by May 1. This event will be potluck style and "BYO drink" (no alcohol please). After the event ends (8:30), folks will be free to continue conversations across the street at the Lucky Labrador Public House.

Sunday, 5/16, 5:00-8:00 pm - Business Meeting, Potluck and Program. Location at the home of Martin Kaplan, 19436 Wilderness Dr in West Linn. All are welcome to the 5pm CRPCA business meeting (tentative), 6pm dinner (please bring a dish to share), and 7pm program on the Immigrant Experience.

Monday, 5/31, 6:30 pm - Soirée. An informal gathering at the Lucky Labrador Brew Pub, 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland. June 2010

Saturday, 6/05, 8:30 pm - Starlight Parade, the Portland Rose Festival's primary community parade. In early 2010 CRPCA will apply to renew our tradition of marching in country-of-service attire. More info to follow.

Sunday, 6/13, 5:00-8:00 pm - Business Meeting, Potluck and Program. Location TBA; e-mail Madeleine Mader if you're willing to host and could accommodate a turnout of 25-50. All are welcome to the 5pm CRPCA business meeting (where we will determine which grants to award for the summer grant cycle), 6pm dinner (please bring a dish to share), and 7pm program (TBA).

Fri-Sun, 6/25-6/27 - CRPCA's 2nd Annual Local Campout. Champoeg State Heritage Area (birthplace of the State of Oregon), 30 miles from central Portland (get directions from the Oregon State Parks website). Our group sites will permit up to 50 people (in tents) and 12 vehicles (no RVs). Check-in 4pm Friday, checkout 1pm Sunday. More info to follow on costs, activities, and reservations. The potluck dinner, open to non-campers, will be at 6pm Sat 6/26.

Sunday, 8/08 - Bridge Pedal, the one day each year that all of Portland's Willamette River Bridges are open to bicycles and pedestrians. CRPCA will participate as a team. More info to follow.

Thu-Mon, 8/12-8/16 - West Regional RPCV Campout, hosted by CRPCA near at Crane Prairie group camp near Bend, Oregon. More information is available on our Regional Activities page.
